Instead of having a normal dinner, attend the Detective Dinner Theater to have plenty of entertainment as you enjoy your meal. The dinner theater features the Clearwater Players and is an interactive murder mystery with a hint of comedy.
When to Go
The Detective Dinner Theater takes place every single Saturday night, all year round. It is at the Clearwater/St. Petersburg Marriot in St. Petersburg, Florida, a quick drive from Venice. The doors open at 7 p.m., and the show and dinner begin at 7:30 p.m. Each ticket is $56.50, but there are discounts for groups of tickets. You can also schedule a private party at a discounted per-person rate plus the room fee. Be sure to make a reservation since those are required; popular dates sell out fast, so plan ahead.
You Get Involved
During the Detective Dinner Theater, you do more than just sit back and eat your meal while the actors do their job. You get involved, figuring out the clues and working to solve the murder. You will even get “DDT” money so you can bribe players to help you out with some hints. During the evening, you get a dinner course followed by a play act. This gives you more than enough time to talk to the suspects. At the end, everyone fills out their own ballot. Whoever solves the murder and lists the most correct clues will get a prize.
What About Dinner?
Since this is a dinner theater, it makes sense to wonder what is served. The meal always includes local, fresh foods bought from local farms and farmers markets. The dinner includes a mixed greens garden salad, a chicken creation, a pastry dessert, coffee, tea, water, and soda. You can also request a vegan or vegetarian option if you prefer. In addition to the food, the hotel has a complete liquor bar, but those drinks are not included in your ticket. The bartender or server will gladly bring you one.
What to Wear
The dress code when attending the Detective Dinner Theatre is smart casual. Although men don’t have to wear a jacket and tie, many do. Many men opt for khaki pants with a polo shirt, while women tend to choose pantsuits or sundresses.
Other Important Notes
Guests of any age are welcome to attend the Detective Dinner Theater with a ticket; there is no age requirement. Don’t worry about tipping the servers, as their gratuity is included. Most guests tip the cast, however. The room is set up with round tables that can hold 10 guests each, and the cast walks around the room during the performance. You also don’t have to participate unless you want, but that is part of the fun.
