4th Annual Sarasota Lionfish Derby
The Sarasota Lionfish Derby is a two-day event, sponsored by Mote Marine Laboratory. The competition is a way to help divers harvest lionfish and provide public education for those who come to the weigh in. The captain’s meeting takes place on July 7th, followed by the competition on July 8th and 9th, with the weigh in on the second night at the marina. The public is invited to see the hundreds of lionfish brought in and to taste the delicious fresh lionfish for free. Last year, 459 were caught and removed from the gulf! So whether you’re interested in competing, learning more about the cause, or just want free dinner, come down to Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium on July 9th, 2017. It’s located nearby at 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway.
9th Annual Sarasota Improv Festival
On July 13th – 17th, laughter will take over the Florida Studio Theatre Campus at the Sarasota Improv Festival. This annual festival brings together the most creative and inventive improve groups from all across the country and the world. These people come to take risks, get raw, and get live on stage. Local Florida improv groups will appear, and the festival will include workshops taught by professional improvisers attending. 3-day, 2-day, and single-day passes are available at prices ranging from $20 to $75. Get ready to LOL at the Florida Studio Theatre!
Snooty’s 69th Birthday Bash and Wildlife Festival
The world’s oldest manatee on record lives nearby in Bradenton, FL. His name is Snooty, and this year he will be 69 years old. In honor of his long and fruitful life, the city is holding a birthday bash and wildlife festival. The festivities will take place on July 22nd, from 10 AM until 2 PM. There will be wildlife awareness information, children’s games and art activities, and free cookies and juice. The birthday party is free and takes place at the Spanish Plaza. While you’re there, enjoy the all-day half-price museum admission from 10 AM until 5 PM. This discounted access applies to the museum, aquarium, and planetarium in honor of Snooty!
